Overview
'Archives and manuscript collections' covering a wide variety of printed, typescript and manuscript material and newspaper cuttings relating to the war. A catalogue search yields 84 results for 'World War One' and 159 for 'First World War', but relevant material germane to the build up to war, its aftermath and legacy, is likely to be much more extensive and is searchable via personal name, corporate name, subject or place name enquiries. Material includes private papers and official publications covering themes such as diplomacy (including US involvement in the war), Parliamentary debates, the Imperial War Conference of 1918, the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, medical treatment, the Curragh Mutiny, Indian Army War Diaries, payment to soldiers in India, pensions, nursing in Mesopotamia and Europe, death in service, poetry and peace celebrations. Papers, or the extracts from papers, of named individuals from the war period, containing first hand accounts, include luminaries such as Robert Graves, G K Chesterton, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Henry James.
